Jlloyd Samuel death: Aston Villa to remember defender with black armbands in Championship play-off semi-final

Aston Villa players will wear black armbands during tonight's Championship play-off game against Middlesbrough in tribute to former player Jlloyd Samuel, who died in a car crash on Tuesday.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association announced the news earlier on Tuesday. Samuel, who was 37 years old, reportedly collided with an oncoming car when returning home after driving his children to school.

The statement continued: "The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and his former national team-mates at this time extends deepest condolences to his family members both in the UK and here in Trinidad and Tobago."

Samuel spent eight seasons in the Premier League with Villa before moving on to Bolton Wanderers in 2007. He represented England at Under-18, Under-20 and Under-21 level.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former player Jlloyd Samuel at the age of just 37 in a car accident," the club tweeted.

"Our players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect tonight and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this very difficult time."

Sven-Goran Eriksson handed Samuel a senior call-up in 2004 but the defender never made the pitch. He eventually declared for Trinidad and Tobago and made two appearances.

Villa have Middlesbrough this evening in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final, where they lead 1-0 from the first leg.

The winners will face Fulham on Saturday, May 26 for a place in the Premier League next season.
