Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde has signed a new one-year contract extension with the Catalan club.

Valverde, 55, took over at Camp Nou in 2017 and won the league and cup double in his first season. The extension, which takes his deal through until 2020, includes another option to add a further year should both parties wish to do so.

The Barcelona boss will pen his extension at the stadium on Friday morning before facing the media ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Real Valladolid.

Valverde’s side sit six points clear of rivals Real Madrid as they look to claim a second successive La Liga title this term.

As a player, the Spaniard made just 24 appearances for Barcelona, scoring eight goals, but during his tenure as head coach Valverde has taken charge of 96 games, adding the Spanish Super Cup to his personal trophy haul during his second season in charge.
