Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to join Manchester United this summer after the club confirmed on Saturday they have agreed a fee with Bayern Munich for the midfielder.

The Red Devils revealed that a deal, believed to be worth £5.75 million, had been struck between the two clubs and that the Germany World Cup winner would now undergo a medical and agree personal terms before finalising his move.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Bayern Munich to sign midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, subject to a medical and personal terms," a statement on the club's official website read.

"A further announcement will be made when the process is complete."

United's confirmation of the transfer came minutes after Bayern's CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted that Schweinsteiger had asked the club to let him leave during this transfer window.

Speaking about the move, Rummenigge told reporters in a press conference to unveil Joshua Kimmich and Douglas Costa: "Bastian wants to do something new at the end of his career.

"He asked that we meet his wishes.

Schweinsteiger, who had a year remaining on his current contract at the Allianz Arena, will link back up with his former manager at Bayern Van Gaal when he completes a move to United.

The midfielder - who came through the club's youth ranks - was converted from a wide player into a central midfielder by the Dutchman during his tenure at Bayern.

Schweinsteiger won eight Bundesliga titles in 13 seasons at Bayern, but is now set to become the third player to arrive at United this summer.

Once Schweinsteiger's move is also complete, he will become the first German to play for United's first team.
