Sepp Blatter has announced his resignation as Fifa president after holding the position for 17 years.
In a week that has seen football's governing body sideswiped by one of sport's biggest corruption scandals, the 79-year-old announced his resignation at Fifa HQ in Zurich.
Addressing the gathered press he confirmed that he would be vacating the position he has held since 1998.
"I have thoroughly considered my presidency and thought about my presidency and the last 40 years in my life," said Blatter.
"These years were closely related to Fifa and this wonderful sport of football, I appreciate and love Fifa more than anything else and only want to do the best for football and Fifa and our institution.
"I decided to stand again to be elected because I convinced it was the best option for football. The challenges that Fifa are facing have not come to an end."
"I appreciate and love Fifa more than anything else... I only want to do the best for football," said Blatter.
"I will organise extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president," he continued. "I will not stand."
Blatter's announcement comes within five days of being re-elected president, after Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein dropped out after the first round of voting in Zurich on Friday.
