Burnley seal Premier League promotion with win at Middlesbrough

Burnley have secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

After Luton Town failed to beat play-off chasers Millwall earlier on Friday, Vincent Kompany's Clarets could seal a return to the top flight with victory at Middlesbrough.

Ashley Barnes' goal after 12 minutes set the promotion party going and Nathan Tella looked set to double the lead shortly afterawrds but somehow screwed his shot wide.

Chuba Akpom levelled from the penalty spot minutes after the restart for the second half - Cameron Archer going down under pressure from Josh Cullen - but that didn't stop the promotion party.

With a little under 25 minutes to play, Tella made amends for his earlier miss by putting the ball on a plate for Connor Roberts to tap home.

Burnley were the better team for most of the game and held on victory to spark wild scenes in the Riverside away end.

The Clarets still have seven games of the league season to play, and sit 11 points clear of second-placed Sheffield United as they look to be crown champions over the coming weeks.
