Manchester United and holders Manchester City will clash in the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the second successive year next month.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will face fellow Londoners Brentford - through to a major domestic cup semi-final for the first time in their history - after the draw for the last four was conducted on Wednesday night.

United continued their run of semi-final berths under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the last quarter-final tie of the week at Goodison Park, with Edinson Cavani netting a wonderful late strike and Anthony Martial scoring a last-gasp second in a deserved 2-0 triumph over Everton.

That win came 24 hours after City had demolished crisis-stricken Arsenal 4-1 courtesy of goals from Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte.

That was an incredible 18th successive Carabao Cup victory for Pep Guardiola’s side, who have won the competition in each of the last three seasons.

They have not lost a Carabao Cup tie since 2016 and will meet United in the semis for the second season in a row, having dismissed their rivals 3-2 on aggregate in January 2020 - despite a second-leg defeat at home - before going on to see off Aston Villa at Wembley.

The two teams have met twice since then, with United winning 2-0 at Old Trafford before the Premier League’s suspension in March and then a drab goalless draw that was played out behind closed doors earlier in December.

In-form Brentford will be seeking a fifth Premier League scalp of the season when they make the short trip to Tottenham, having beaten Newcastle on Tuesday night thanks to Josh Dasilva’s superb second-half effort.

West Brom, Southampton and west London rivals Fulham had already been stung by the Bees prior to that tense last-eight showdown.

Tottenham, meanwhile, face Championship opposition again as they seek to move within one more win of a first major trophy since 2008.

Gareth Bale, Ben Davies and Harry Kane all struck for Spurs in a 3-1 win at Stoke on Wednesday, with Jose Mourinho’s men having also come out on top in a penalty shootout against Chelsea earlier in the competition.

Both semi-final ties this season are one-legged, with matches to be played at Old Trafford and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium respectively during the week beginning January 4.
