Millwall defender Carlos Edwards has revealed how some stern words from manager Ian Holloway inspired their promising start to the season.

The former QPR and Crystal Palace boss has been in charge since January, having taken over after Steve Lomas was sacked following six months at the helm.

Edwards admits Lomas was punished for the players failing to deliver and says Holloway has told them they have to take more responsibility for their performances.

Millwall are fifth after five games and Edwards, who joined the club on a permanent basis in the summer after a spell on loan from Ipswich, said: “It is just down to a bit of self-belief.

“The team let themselves down loads last season and that was two years on the trot they were looking down the barrel. We can all blame managers but it is all down to the players because we are the ones who go out there on the pitch.

“There was some good soul searching among the players. Ian Holloway played a big part also by telling the players to look into their soul and not just think about themselves but also their family and friends who are also supporting them.

“They got a reality check and you can see we’ve been reaping the rewards so far. I don’t think it [the play-offs] is beyond us."
