Arsenal are yet to receive any encouragement from Paris St Germain over a possible move for Edinson Cavani as the Gunners remain open to signing a top class centre-forward before the transfer window closes.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted last night that any hopes of signing Karim Benzema from Real Madrid are “dead” after the player posted a picture on Twitter in which he described the Bernabeu Stadium as his home.

Wenger was waiting for an indication that a deal was possible before submitting a formal offer but now he must turn his attentions elsewhere. Last week, he bemoaned a “shortage” of top strikers in the world but Arsenal have scouted Cavani in the past and would be interested if a transfer was possible.

However, PSG have shown no interest in allowing the 28-year-old to leave, especially as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ezequiel Lavezzi are expected to depart. Arsenal will monitor the situation and remain open to making other additions depending on what opportunities arise in the final week of the window.
