Champions League knockout stage 2017-18: How and when Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Man City and Tottenham can qualify

Alex Young @alexwsyoung31 October 2017

We are now over halfway through the Champions League group stage, meaning a place in the knockout stages is firmly in sight for some.

English football has a record five teams in the competition proper this season, and all but one can secure their place in the hat for the next round if results go their way this week.

In total, 11 teams can on Tuesday or Wednesday secure one of the 16 spots remaining in the Champions League beyond the turn of the calendar year.

Manchester City and Manchester United boast a perfect record thus far, while Chelsea and Tottenham have dropped just two points. Liverpool have struggled more than expected, but scored seven away from home last time out.

Chelsea

Antonio Conte's side will reach the round of 16 with a win over Roma on Tuesday evening.

The Italian side earned a share of the spoils at Stamford Bridge with a 3-3 draw last time out to halt the Blues dominance in Group C.

A draw or a loss at the Stadio Olimpico means Chelsea will have to beat Qarabag, who they thrashed 6-0 on matchday one, in the following fixtures to qualify before facing Atletico Madrid in December.

Tottenham

Spurs will remain in the Champions League beyond the group stage for only the second time if they upset the odds at beat Real Madrid at Wembley on Wednesday.

If Dortmund lose to APOEL this week and Spurs hold Real Madrid to another draw, both teams at Wembley will go through.

Borussia Dortmund's dismal form - one point from three games - means Mauricio Pochettino & Co. need just one win from their final three games to qualify. Even a loss to Real followed by a draw in Germany in matchday five will be enough.

In fact, there will be little reason to panic with a loss to the holders and then to the German outfit as a win at home to APOEL on the final matchday will almost certainly be enough to secure a last-16 spot.

Manchester United

Manchester United will book their last-16 place with a win at home over Benfica and CSKA Moscow failing to beat Basel. A draw will be enough at Old Trafford if CSKA lose in Switzerland.

A defeat at home to pointless Benfica is still no disaster as a draw or win away at Basel in matchday five will be enough to qualify and secure top spot.

Manchester City

A draw or win away at Napoli will see Man City reach the round of 16.

In fact, Pep Guardiola's side need just one win from their remaining games to secure top spot, and just one point to be all but guaranteed of qualification with Shakhtar Donetsk and Napoli facing each other in matchday five.

Liverpool

Liverpool are the only English team unable to qualify in matchday four after failing to win either of their opening two games.

However, they still sit top of Group E on head to head and face Maribor, who they put seven past two weeks ago, on Wednesday.

Otherwise, the group is too close to call regarding permutations.
