Manchester City are on course for a meeting with incoming manager Pep Guardiola in the Champions League final next month, if they can negotiate a semi-final with ten-time champions Real Madrid.

City, playing in their first-ever European semi-final after eliminating French champions Paris St Germain in the quarter finals, have been handed a draw that will reunite Manuel Pellegrini with his former side.

Pellegrini spent just one season at Madrid between 2009 and 2010, managing the side to a record La Liga points haul of 99 before making way for Jose Mourinho. The Chilean has found himself dismissed once more at the Etihad, with City announcing in February that Guardiola would take over at the start of next season.

The other Champions League semi-final will see tournament favourites Bayern Munich take on Atletico Madrid, who eliminated the previous frontrunners Barcelona with a 2-0 victory at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday.

In his third season at Bayern Guardiola is still yet to replicate his two European Cup triumphs with Barcelona and is likely to face a stern test from one of Europe’s meanest defences. Atletico have conceded just five goals in 10 Champions League matches this season.

The semi-finals will take place over April 26-27 and May 3-4, with the final set for May 28 at the San Siro in Milan.
