The 2018-19 Champions League Final began in controversial circumstances as Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot in under two minites.

Following a dramatic Champions League campaign, the final itself - an all-English affair between Tottenham and Liverpool - duly got off to a fitting start in Madrid.

Sadio Mane's attempt at a cross was adjudged to have been handled by Moussa Sissoko by referee Damir Skomina, who pointed to the spot.

There was a substantial wait as the video assistant referee checked the decision, but Salah kept his nerve and buried the spot-kick.

The penalty was Salah's fifth Champions League goal this season, taking him level with Spurs pair Harry Kane and Lucas Moura.

While Salah has only scored half the Champions League goals he netted last time, his spot-kick in Madrid could well prove to be the most important of his career.

It was an important moment in more ways than one for the Egyptian, who left last season's final in tears after being injured during a clash with Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.
