Charlton head coach Guy Luzon is not surprised Joe Gomez has made such an impressive start to his Liverpool career and has backed the defender to one day play for England.

Gomez left Charlton for Liverpool in a £3.5m deal in the summer and has made an excellent start to life in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old looked good at left-back against Arsenal on Monday night and Luzon said: “It has not surprised me because I knew that he had potential to be a good player. In my opinion, he will play for England.”

Gomez, an England Under-19 international, only made 24 senior appearances for Charlton before moving to Anfield and was expected to go out on loan this season.

“I am enjoying it,” said Gomez. “To get our third clean sheet in a row is great for us as a back four.”
