Lee Bowyer has put any thoughts about his own future on the back-burner to fully focus on leading Charlton to promotion at Wembley on Sunday.

The Charlton manager’s contract expires next month but discussions over a new deal are on hold until after the League One Play-Off Final against Sunderland.

Bowyer has done a brilliant job to put Charlton on the verge of a return to the Championship, and yet his future has still not been resolved by owner Roland Duchatelet.

Bowyer has said he wants to stay at Charlton but it is understood several clubs have been impressed by his work this season and are keeping a close eye on his situation.

The 42-year-old was considered for the QPR job before they appointed Mark Warburton and he could be in demand this summer, especially if he has a promotion on his CV.

Contract talks are set to resume next week and Bowyer is optimistic an agreement will be reached. But for now, he is only focused on securing promotion.

Bowyer said: “We are going to speak again after the game. The last couple of weeks we have wanted to focus on getting back into the Championship, because that is the most important thing.

"I am sure we will agree for me to stay. I want to stay, I love the club.”

Charlton have people waiting in the wings to make a fresh takeover move for the club after Sunday, when they know which division they will be in next season.

A group of potential buyers are interested in ending owner Duchatelet's disastrous tenure and Charlton fans hope promotion will signal the start of a new chapter at The Valley.

Bowyer said: “If we get the right result on Sunday then I would love to lead this team into the Championship.

"It would be difficult because there are a lot of bigger clubs in that division who spend a hell of a lot of money. And we know the situation with our club.

“But it could all change in the summer and if we go up then we do not know what situation we would be in? This club should not be in League One. Promotion would open up new doors and new pathways for the club.

“I have told the players this week to enjoy the moment and grab it. I played with a hell of a lot of good players who never got a chance to play at Wembley.

"I have tried to make them realise this is a special moment. Every player wants to play in these occasions.”
