Arsenal and Chelsea are to meet before the start of next season in a pre-season friendly in Beijing.

The two London sides will renew their rivalry in the Far East on July 22 roughly a fortnight before the new Premier League season is expected to begin.

Beijing’s Bird Nest stadium, centre piece of the 2008 Olympics, will host the event despite doubts over its quality as a football stadium. Last summer a pre-season fixture between Manchester United and Manchester City was cancelled over pitch concerns.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said: “In this moment we are focused on winning a very important game against Arsenal in the league but we are happy to be travelling to China for another exciting match in the summer.

“I have seen already the passion our supporters have for Chelsea here in England and last summer in America, and I believe our fans in China will show the same intensity when we are in Beijing.”

The fixture in Beijing will add to a hectic schedule next summer for Arsenal. As Standard Sport first revealed in December 2015 the Gunners are to play two games in Australia at the 80,000-plus capacity ANZ Stadium in Sydney earlier in July.
