Chelsea and Tottenham stars lead way in our London Team of the Week

In this week’s Standard Sport London team of the week in association with Whoscored.com, Chelsea and Tottenham have three representatives each in the side, but overall, it was a poor week for all six capital clubs, with none managing to win their matches.

Tottenham were undone by a resilient Newcastle side after Loic Remy’s early strike secured all three points for the Magpies. Tim Krul was in sensational form, making 14 saves to prevent Spurs from saving a point at White Hart Lane.

Jan Vertonghen picked up the Player of the Week award for his assured performance from the back, while Andros Townsend and playmaker Christian Eriksen were each handed a place after creating a potent attacking threat throughout the game.

Chelsea forward Samuel Eto’o continued his impressive run of form, notching his fourth goal in as many games after scoring the opener against West Brom, and leads the line in our team this week.

But the Blues squandered their one-goal advantage after goals from Shane Long and Stephane Sessegnon and were trailing 2-1 until Eden Hazard calmly slotted home his penalty in the sixth minute of stoppage time. The Belgian makes the cut as well as team-mate Branislav Ivanovic for grabbing a point for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Crystal Palace picked up their first draw of the season with a 0-0 stalemate at home to Everton, and captain Mile Jedinak makes the team for the first time this season after a solid display in midfield. His team-mate – Wales international Danny Gabbidon – also earned a spot in the backline for keeping a clean sheet.

Arsenal experienced a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford after former Gunner Robin van Persie’s match winner, with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud all failing to impress, and they are omitted from this week’s lineup as a result.

However, the North London side were on the front foot for the majority of the game and Mikel Arteta was at the heart of most Arsenal attacks, justifying his inclusion in the midfield, while Thomas Vermaelen deputised for Per Mertesacker at the back and put in a respectable performance.

Maarten Stekelenburg is the final addition to the side in between the sticks, despite having to withstand a barrage from Liverpool’s attackers. The Dutchman may have conceded four times in Fulham’s 4-1 loss but it would have been a cricket score without the former Ajax goalkeeper.
