Chelsea are expected to appeal goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ red card from Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City.

The 23-year-old was shown a straight red by Michael Oliver after bringing down Bafetimbi Gomis inside the area in the 52nd minute of the champion’s season opener.

The Swansea striker beat Courtois’ replacement, debutant Asmir Begovic, to level the scoreline and give the visitors a point to take with them to Wales.

The champions have until Tuesday to lodge an appeal for a decision. Manager Jose Mourinho was reluctant to say anything about the referee’s decision in the aftermath of the game, refusing to comment on Courtois’ dismissal.

However Mourinho’s Swansea counterpart had no such doubts. "It is what it is. I think the referee got it right," Garry Monk said.

"Bafe would have a goal-scoring opportunity had the keeper not come out at that point so it’s definitely a penalty and red card."
