Chelsea fans launch 'John Terry Stand' petition for new stadium

The 36-year-old Chelsea captain announced last month that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season after 22 years of service.

The former England captain has been studying for coaching badges while also learning Portuguese in preparation for the next stage of his career, but insists he wants to continue playing despite a lack of game time this season.

But while Terry may be moving on from Chelsea - at least for now - a petition posted on Change.org by 'Carefree Daily' on May 3 calls for the club to immortalise their long-serving skipper at their new planned stadium.

The petition - which had reached 2,613 supporters of its 5,000 target by Thursday evening - reads: "Captain. Leader. Legend. There is no one on the planet who's more Chelsea, than John Terry.

"He's lifted every trophy in the game, having been at Chelsea since the start of his career. The man is an icon for not just Chelsea fans, but lovers of football all around the world.

"We, Chelsea fans, want the club to honour him by naming a stand at the new Stamford Bridge stadium after the greatest Chelsea Captain of all time.

"Use the hashtag #JohnTerryStand on social media!"

Standard Sport understands that Chelsea expect to move out of Stamford Bridge for the 2019-20 season in order for the ground to be redeveloped - a year later than scheduled.

In January, the club were granted planning permission by Fulham and Hammersmith council to rebuild the ground into a 60,000 all-seater and the scheme was given the final go-ahead by London Mayor Sadiq Khan two months later.

It was initially hoped work could begin during the next campaign before switching to a temporary home for three seasons at the start of 2018-19.

But the complexity of the project, which involves building decking over railway lines at the back of the site, has led to delays.
