Chelsea FC player ratings vs Arsenal: Romelu Lukaku bullies Gunners in man-of-the-match debut

AP

Romelu Lukaku produced a man-of-the-match display on his second Chelsea debut as Arsenal were brushed aside on Sunday.

Here’s how James Robson rated those in blue...

Edouard Mendy 6

Tipped over Saka’s deflected shot after the break and out quickly to deny Aubameyang when the Arsenal striker look set to go through on goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta 7

Crucial challenge denied Saka on the break in the first half. Made a number of timely interventions.

Andreas Christensen 7

Mopped up so much of Arsenal’s threat at times when they looked like getting in behind Chelsea’s defence.

Toni Rudiger 6

Stretched at times when Arsenal were on the break, but generally came up with the solution.

Reece James 8

Scored one, made one and got away with what looked like a stonewall penalty. Chelsea’s creative source on the day.

Jorginho 6

Had good control of midfield, but unusually, his through-balls let him down on occasion.

Mateo Kovacic 6

Use of the ball was so intelligent in Chelsea’s build-up to push Arsenal onto the back foot.

Marcos Alonso 6

Typically all-action display. In one moment cutting out the danger at the back – in another, leading Chelsea’s charge going forward.

Mason Mount 7

His through ball put James in to score Chelsea’s second. The pair of them combined really well on the right, allowing Mount to come inside more often. Cross for Lukaku late on deserved a goal.

Kai Havertz 7

Some moments of real quality with his passing to open up Arsenal and stretch the game. Early signs of an understanding with Lukaku.

Romelu Lukaku 8

That’s the way to make an entrance. Directed so much of Chelsea’s play by telling those around him exactly where he wanted the ball played. Some outstanding hold-up play and a debut goal as well.
