Chelsea have been told just how much it will take to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Blues are still in need of greater firepower up front despite the lavish sums spent in the transfer market over recent windows, with Nicolas Jackson currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations with defending champions Senegal, Christopher Nkunku struggling with a hip injury and Armando Broja potentially set to be sold amid interest from Premier League rivals Aston Villa, West Ham, Fulham and Wolves.

Chelsea have been linked with scores of strikers in the current January window, though an expensive deal seems unlikely at this time without further player sales as the club bid to ensure that they comply with top-flight financial rules.

The likes of Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Napoli marksman Victor Osimhen do not seem attainable in that regard until the summer, while it seems that Gyokeres will likely be out of reach for now also.

The former Coventry forward - along with the likes of Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy, Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko - is another name frequently connected with Chelsea, having continued to thrive since swapping the Championship for Portugal's Primeira Liga last summer in a deal worth around £20million.

Gyokeres has scored 22 goals and registered 10 assists in just 25 games across all competitions for Sporting to date, already leading to speculation over another swift transfer.

Recent reports claimed Chelsea had bid €85m (£72.8m) for the Swedish international, though Sporting boss Ruben Amorim insists that is simply not enough as the Lisbon giants hold out for a huge €100m (£85.7m) sum for their star striker.

“I don't know, I didn't even ask [director of football Hugo] Viana," Amorim said this week when quizzed on that rumoured Blues offer.

“Obviously, I was informed of the news. As soon as they said it was €85m, I thought: 'that's not enough'. It's only €100m. I'm not worried."
