Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas celebrates claiming Spanish assist record

Cesc Fabregas may be struggling to find form in a Chelsea shirt but the playmaker is still enjoying success at international level.

The 28-year-old laid on the 30th assist of his time in the Spanish national team against Luxembourg in Logroño on Friday, slipping in a through ball to Valencia striker Paco Alcacer to give his team a 2-0 win. The assist took him beyond former team-mate Xavi’s record haul for the national team.

Spain would go on to win the game 4-0, securing their place at next summer’s European Championships, and Fabregas was in a celebratory mood after the win.

He posted on his Facebook wall: “I feel extremely proud to have become the player with most assists of the Spanish National Team! Game 99.... Keep it up!!!!!!”

Fabregas has struggled to replicate the form he showed at the start of his Chelsea career. After recording 15 league assists between August and January of his first season at his new club. Since then he has managed just four.
