Chelsea miss out on Robert Lewandowski

Chelsea’s hopes of signing Robert Lewandowski are over after Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp confirmed the striker will join Bayern Munich next year.

The Blues have already lost out to Paris St-Germain in the race for Napoli forward Edinson Cavani and had hoped Lewandowki could be persuaded to move to Stamford Bridge instead.

Lewandowski has only one year left on his contract and Dortmund were prepared to sell him this summer but only if he moved abroad.

The 24-year-old has set his sights on moving to Bayern but Dortmund won’t sell him to their German rivals because earlier this summer they acquired one of their best players in Mario Goetze.

Lewandowski is refusing to consider a move elsewhere, so Dortmund are prepared to let him see out his contract and leave on a free transfer next year.

Klopp said: “It is a known fact that Robert is going to play for Bayern after the upcoming season. Now the only question is how to shape the time until then. That is our commitment to ensure that we will have a more competitive team in the upcoming season.

“Up to a certain point we were with Robert’s desire for change and were ready to talk. But nothing happened so we had to eventually say a sale now no longer works for us.

“And now we want to prove that, with a quality player like Robert, we can be successful in the coming year.”

Chelsea currently have Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku as their options to play up front but new manager Jose Mourinho still wants to add a big-name forward.

Mourinho, who took his first training session at Cobham today, is running out of options, although Bayern striker Mario Gomez is a possibility.

Meanwhile, Chelsea still haven’t given up hope of signing Sporting Lisbon winger Bruma. The club are prepared to pay around £8m for the winger, who has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, and then send the 18-year-old back on loan there next season.

They are also in talks with West Brom over compensation for 16-year-old midfielder Isaiah Brown, who has already agreed to move to Stamford Bridge. His fee will be decided by a tribunal if the two clubs fail to agree terms.
