Chelsea 'near to appointing Roberto di Matteo as permanent manager'

7 June 2012

Chelsea have reportedly told Roberto di Matteo they want him to stay as manager.

The Italian masterminded a Champions League and FA Cup double last season after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas.

Di Matteo has been backed in several quarters to take the job on a permanent basis and is now said to have been asked to remain as manager, according to the Daily Mail.

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay recently stated his hope that a new manager could be in place soon.

"(A new manager could be appointed) any time over the next couple of weeks and certainly by the time we go on tour", Gourlay said.

"The players report back on July 4th or 5th and in an ideal world you want the coach in position by then."
