Chelsea need Alex

11 April 2012

Carlo Ancelotti may gamble on Alex's fitness at Aston Villa on Saturday if John Terry fails to recover from a back problem.

Branislav Ivanovic is Chelsea's only fit centre-half after Terry suffered back spasms on England duty. Alex, who was expected to be out for three weeks after limping off against Arsenal nine days ago, has resumed light training and could be ready in time while Jeffrey Bruma, 18, is too inexperienced.

Ivanovic's agent, Vlado Borozan, has confirmed that the Serbia international is ready to sign a contract extension. The 26-year-old has been targeted by AC Milan and Juventus but Borozan said: "Those rumours are without foundation. The lad is about to sign a contract extension with Chelsea so I really don't think he will be moving away."
