Chelsea joined Premier League rivals Manchester United in stepping up preparations for the 2019-20 season restart by staging an intra-squad friendly at their own stadium on Saturday.

The Blues - who currently sit fourth in the top-flight with a three-point buffer to fifth-placed United with nine matches remaining - are provisionally scheduled to resume competitive action away at Aston Villa on June 21 before matches against Manchester City, Leicester City and West Ham United.

Like the rest of their top-tier rivals, Chelsea recently made a return to contact training after initially conducting individual sessions and then small-group activities in line with protocols agreed under 'Project Restart'.

While Frank Lampard's first-team squad had previously only been at their Cobham training ground since returning to work, on Saturday they took things up a notch by moving proceedings to Stamford Bridge.

No doubt in order to gauge his team's current readiness for a return to league matches in two weeks' time, the Chelsea boss - while future signing Timo Werner was in action for RB Leipzig against Paderborn in the Bundesliga - had them play out an 11 v 11 friendly in full kit, with one team donning the traditional blue home strip and the other wearing this season's white away offering.

Officiating duties were carried out by Lampard himself, as well as the members of his coaching staff.

A number of Chelsea players subsequently posted photos of the friendly on social media, with highly-rated teenage midfielder Billy Gilmour tweeting: "Great to be back at Stamford Bridge this afternoon."

That sentiment was shared by a number of team-mates including Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Emerson Palmieri, with the latter tweeting: "Happy to be back at the Bridge!"

It was a particularly significant encounter for Loftus-Cheek, who has been sidelined for 13 months after experiencing plenty of setbacks in his recovery from a serious Achilles injury.

Reports claim that the 24-year-old midfielder was on the scoresheet in Saturday's friendly.
