Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham's loss of form not down to contract uncertainty, says Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard does not believe Tammy Abraham’s protracted contract talks with Chelsea are behind his dip in form this year.

But he has told the striker to put any thoughts he does have on his contract situation to one side and concentrate on regaining his goalscoring touch from the first half of the season.

Abraham has been in discussions over a new deal since last year but progress has been slower than expected and he appears no closer to reaching an agreement.

Chelsea are keen to tie down Abraham, who has two years left on his current contract. But, for now, Lampard wants the 22-year-old to focus on finishing the season strongly.

Abraham has scored 15 goals this season but has not found the net in 10 games stretching back to January and he has been behind Olivier Giroud in the pecking order since the restart.

Lampard wants Abraham to concentrate on his work on the training pitch to recapture the form that saw he become the first player ever to win Premier League Player of the Year and Young Premier League Player of the Year in the same season at the 2020 London Football Awards.

Lampard said: “Tammy’s contract, we are not at a critical level with it. I will leave that between him and the club to discuss that side of it. I do not think that is in his mind now, well it certainly shouldn’t be.

"What needs to be in his mind now is these games coming up and how much he can give us on the pitch, whether he is coming on as a sub or starting.

"He has had a really good season. He has not scored so much in the second half of the season. As a young player it is clear there is only one way out of it, and that is work and repetition in training and every moment. That is where Tammy is at.

“The contract will hopefully look after itself between him and the club. He just needs to focus on giving us that Tammy we had earlier in the season, which was giving defenders so much of a problem in games and scoring regularly.

"And it all came from how he was working and training in the week. You could see it in his demeanour in the week, which meant he performed on matchdays.

"That is what he has to sustain all the time.”
