Frank Lampard to hand Danny Drinkwater a career lifeline as Chelsea reign begins

1/29

Danny Drinkwater will look to begin the resurrection of his Chelsea career in Dublin on Wednesday night.

The midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge in 2017 from Leicester for £35million but has failed to establish himself. He made just one appearance last season — and that came in the Community Shield against Manchester City.

However, new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has promised all his players a clean slate and Drinkwater will be one of those looking to turn his fortunes around. The 29-year-old is in line to feature in the friendly against Bohemians as Lampard begins his reign.

The squad is expected to include several youngsters, although senior players such as Cesar Azpilicueta, Pedro and Drinkwater are likely to feature. Michy Batshuayi, who spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, is also in contention to play.

Tonight’s match is the first of seven pre-season fixtures for Chelsea and Azpilicueta believes it will show fans what they can expect from a Lampard team.

“The manager has explained how he wants us to play and we are all enjoying the camp so far,” said the Spaniard. “We want to play with high intensity and we want to be dominant.”
