Thiago Silva has issued an apology to Chelsea fans and his teammates for his error in the hammering at Newcastle.

The Blues were level at 1-1 on Tyneside as the hour mark approached before a spectacular collapse, which prompted manager Mauricio Pochettino to label the 4-1 defeat his worst in charge of the club.

Anthony Gordon picked out the unmarked Jamaal Lascelles as Newcastle took the lead in the second half before Silva's miscontrol allowed Joelinton to score only 90 seconds later. Chelsea captain Reece James was then sent off before Gordon rounded off the scoring.

Following the defeat, Silva sent a message to fans on social media.

"I'm devastated," he posted on X/Twitter.

"It wasn't a good day for us. I would like to apologise to everyone for the defeat, especially to my teammates who believe in me and support me every day.

"I take full responsibility. Let's gather strength and come back stronger."

Chelsea boss Pochettino refused to single out Silva when asked about the Brazilian veteran's error after the match.

Instead, he condemned his side's "soft" approach to what became a spurned opportunity to continue their good form on Tyneside.

"That is a mistake, I am not talking about mistakes," he told reporters. "I am talking more about energy, we were not prepared in the best way to compete today. That is my concern.

"We thought we were ready to compete today but we didn't in the way the competition demanded. Even if Newcastle weren't great, it was an easy win. To come here, Chelsea, and show it would be difficult for them to play to win the game and beat us [but] it was so easy the way that we conceded.

"The way we were soft in every single challenge, we did not show we were playing for something important. That is why it made me angry and disappointed. Even if we talk about being a young team, we need to learn."
