Clint Dempsey aims to fulfil Euro dream at Spurs

Clint Dempsey is confident he can realise his dream of playing in the Champions League with Tottenham.

Spurs drew 1-1 at Panathinaikos last night, their second consecutive draw in the Europa League, following last Saturday’s 3-2 triumph at Manchester United, which lifted them to fifth in the Premier League.

Dempsey scored his first goal for Spurs at Old Trafford and has seen enough of his new team-mates to believe the club can repeat last season’s fourth-placed finish.

In most seasons, fourth place would have secured Champions League football but Chelsea’s triumph in last year’s final pushed Spurs into the Europa League.

Ahead of Sunday’s clash against Aston Villa at White Hart Lane, Dempsey said: “Playing at the highest level is what you dream about as a kid growing up.

“You see these people on TV and you always push yourself because you want to try to get to that level. This club deserve to be in the Champions League because they finished fourth last year. It was only because of a technicality that they didn’t.”

Spurs are likely to recall Brad Friedel in goal against Villa despite a solid performance from their £12million summer signing Hugo Lloris in the game in Athens.

Jermain Defoe should also keep his place as the team’s lone forward, even though Emmanuel Adebayor is now back in training after recovering from a hamstring injury.
