Cristiano Ronaldo shirt number: Manchester United confirm returning hero WILL take Edinson Cavani’s no7

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed Manchester United’s iconic No7 shirt following his sensational return to Old Trafford.

The Portugal international has been allowed to take up his old number, despite it having already been assigned to Edinson Cavani for the season.

United needed special permission from the Premier League to alter squad numbers, but have confirmed the 36-year-old will wear the shirt that has such a strong resonance with the club’s fans.

Ronaldo completed a £12.8million move to his former club on Monday after previously being in talks with Manchester City.

His return has sparked a frenzy of interest in United and raised hopes of a first Premier League title since 2013.

The No7 has been worn by United’s greats - including George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Ronaldo in his first spell at the club.

Cavani will now take the No21, which he wears for Uruguay.
