Roy Hodgson has confirmed Patrick van Aanholt suffered a dislocated shoulder during the defeat to Manchester United with the Crystal Palace full-back likely to require surgery.

Van Aanholt required oxygen before he was stretchered off late on in Thursday’s contest after a heavy landing immediately after Anthony Martial scored United’s second.

The Dutchman will undergo a scan on Friday morning but Hodgson fears he will be without his first choice left-back for the start of next season.

"It’s a bad injury and it’s going to keep him out for a long period," Hodgson said.

"They’ll look at it tomorrow [by running a scan] and find out what the next step will be for him.

"I think he’ll require an operation and that’s bad news for us. Patrick has been solid for us, he’s had a good season, he's hardly missed any games and now we might start next season without him."
