Crystal Palace will hold talks with Rene Meulensteen after Aitor Karanka joined Middlesbrough.

The club have been searching for a manager for three weeks after Ian Holloway quit and have now turned their attention to Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant at Manchester United.

Former Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu, now in charge of Dynamo Moscow, is the latest name to be linked with Palace.

Karanka was appointed Middlesbrough manager today and after it became clear he was bound for the North-East, Standard Sport understands Palace turned their sights on Meulensteen.

The Dutchman had been expected to move to Qatar as technical director of their football association but his agent, Fons van den Brande, said: “He will definitely not be going to Qatar. I have orders to say nothing else.

“There are a lot of negotiations so we’ll have to see what happens in the next few days.”
