Holders Spain were dumped out of the World Cup on day seven of the tournament, the earliest exit of the defending champions since Italy bowed out on day six of the 1950 competition.

Spain’s elimination was even more sensational given that they also won the two most recent European championships – in 2008 and 2012 – and they become the first World Cup holders to lose their opening two games.

Tonight was also the first time in eight years that La Roja had lost consecutive games.

The reigning champions exiting early has been a recurring theme in recent tournaments, with the last three European World Cup winners leaving the next tournament at the group stage.

France in 2002 and Italy four years ago lasted only until the final group game before being knocked out, having won the 1998 and 2006 tournaments respectively.

Other ignominious exits from World Cup holders include Brazil's group stage exit in 1966 and Argentina departing the 1982 tournament in the second group phase with no points.
