David Beckham believes Tottenham duo Dele Alli and Harry Kane can spur England to glory at Euro 2016 this summer.
Roy Hodgson is certain to name midfielder Alli and this season’s leading Premier League scorer, 25-goal Kane, on Monday in his preliminary 23-man squad for the tournament in France, which starts on June 10.
Former England captain Beckham believes the Tottenham duo can make the difference for the manager.
“England have a good chance of doing very well in the competition,” said England’s most capped outfield player. “They have some young, very talented players who aren’t afraid to play on the world stage.
“For me, Dele Alli and Harry Kane can be the difference. They’ve both had great seasons. Dele plays week in week out for Tottenham, he’s not scared to play, not scared to do things, he’s a joy to watch. Every England fan wants to see Dele do well. Harry is a very talented player and he can learn from the likes of Wayne Rooney.”
Alli played just 25 minutes in two substitute appearances during Euro qualification but his first season in the top flight was a revelation as Spurs challenged for the title until the end of last month. Kane is set to top the scoring chart, having finished second to Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero last season, and already has four goals from 10 appearances for England.
Beckham, who won 115 caps, played in two European Championships and three World Cups and skippered England at three major tournaments.
Asked what advice he had for Kane, Alli and the other young players, such as Eric Dier and Jack Wilshere who are set to feature in Hodgson’s squad, Beckham said: “Go out there and enjoy it because these occasions don’t come around that often.”
England have three warm-up games against Turkey, Australia and Portugal before kicking off their Euro campaign against Russia in Marseilles on June 11.
