The Duke of Cambridge, the president of the Football Association, tweeted his concern for the “football community” over the Super League plans.
Sunday night saw the Premier League's so-called 'big six' of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham confirmed as founding members of a rival to the Champions League.
The backlash has been both fierce and prompt, with prime minister Boris Johnson condemning them on Monday.
Asked about fears the proposed new league could potentially bar clubs such as Leicester and Aston Villa from gaining entry to an elite club competition, Mr Johnson replied: "I think it's wrong.
“I think it's something that's going in the wrong direction for football - for great English and British clubs - and it's going in the wrong direction for fans.”
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden told the House of Commons soon after: "We will not stand by and watch football be cravenly stripped of the things that make millions across the country love it."
Dowden said he had met with the Premier League and the Football Association and said they were "considering a wide range of sanctions".
Prince William tweeted later on Monday: “Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community - from the top level to the grassroots - and the values of competition and fairness at its core.
“I share the concerns of fans about the proposed Super League and the damage it risks causing to the game we love.”
