Arsenal's latest signing Granit Xhaka blazed his penalty wide as Switzerland suffered a shootout defeat to Poland in the first Euro 2016 knokcout tie on Saturday.

The Swiss had trailed for much of the game to Jakub Błaszczykowski's first-half strike, but Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri then fired in a bicycle kick late on from the edge of the box to force extra-time.

The acrobatic effort rivalled many of the great goals already scored at the tournmanent, but Switzerland could not find a route past the Poles in the additional 30 minutes and the game went to penalties.

But Vladimir Petković's side were unable to book a quarter-final spot after Poland dispatched each of their five penalties, while Xhaka failed from 12 yards.

BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce abelled it one of 'the worst penalties on the international stage' and football fans immediately took to social media to poke fun at the Gunners £30million summer signing.
