Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri has backed international team-mate Granit Xhaka to bounce back from his Euro 2016 shootout nightmare.

Xhaka, who joined Arsenal from Borussia Mönchengladbach for around £30million earlier in the summer, cost Switzerland a place in the quarter-finals, missing from 12 yards after the game had finished 1-1.

Shaqiri had given Switzerland hope late in the second half when he scored a spectacular, acrobatic goal from outside the box to cancel out Jakub Błaszczykowski's earlier strike, but the Swiss failed to capitalise on their dominance thereafter.

The Poles rode out plenty of pressure in the additional 30 minutes and dispatched all five of their spot-kicks, while Xhaka's blazed effort was the only blot on Switzerland's copybook.

"Granit is very professional, so he can cope with this," said Shaqiri as he came to terms with Euro 2016 knockout defeat after the game.

"He will get up and move on. Sometimes you are the best, and sometimes the saddest."

Poland advance to the last eight, where they will face Croatia or Portugal.
