Everton have parted company with manager Roberto Martinez today, the club have announced.

The Spaniard arrived at Goodison Park in 2013, but has been dismissed from his position following a poor end to the season which has left the club languishing in 12th place in the standings.

His final match in charge saw Everton succumb to a 3-0 loss away to Sunderland on Wednesday, who secured their Premier League status with the win, handing the Toffees their third successive away defeat in the league.

The club released a statement on Thursday that read: "Everton Football Club regrets to announce that Roberto Martinez has left his position as First Team Manager with immediate effect.

"The Chairman and the Board of Directors would like to place on record their thanks for the dedication and commitment Roberto has shown during his three seasons with the Club.

"Roberto has been a great ambassador for the Club, conducting himself, at all times, with the utmost integrity and dignity. He secured the Club its highest ever Premier League points total, a place in the last 16 of the Europa League and appearances in both domestic cup semi-finals.

"He has also played a key role in the development of several young players, managing their progression to the Everton First Team and International honours."

Martinez arrived at Goodison Park on a four-year deal in 2013 to much expectation after he led former side, Wigan Athletic, to the FA Cup trophy although he could not keep them in the Premier League.

He succeeded David Moyes, who left Everton to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and led the Toffees to a fifth-placed finish with 72 points in his first season in charge - a club record in the Premier League era.

His second campaign saw Everton end in 11th place while this season has seen the club record their worst-ever set of results at home, with eight losses from their 18 matches at Goodison Park.

The team were also recently eliminated from the FA Cup semi-final by Manchester United while the Toffees have only won one of their last 10 games in all competitions, a 2-1 victory at home to Bournemouth.

Everton end their campaign with a home match against relegated Norwich City on Sunday.
