FA dismiss reports of Pep Guardiola talks over England job

27 April 2012

The Football Association have distanced themselves from reports claiming Pep Guardiola has been approached to become England’s next manager.

The Barcelona boss is set to decide his future in the next 72 hours in the wake of the club’s Champions League exit to Chelsea, with the Blues among a number of teams interested in him.

Guardiola’s contract expires at the end of the season but the FA insist they have not sounded out the Spaniard about succeeding Fabio Capello.

The FA told Standard Sport today that no approach has been made to any candidate but they remain “happy with where we are” in the process of selecting a new manager.

It is understood it is unlikely there will be any developments this week with the FA mindful of disrupting the climax to the Premier League season.

At the Team GB announcement on Tuesday, Stuart Pearce claimed he would reveal his squad for Euro 2012 on May 10, three days before the end of the domestic season. That led to speculation that Pearce had been given an indication he will manage England at the finals but the FA insist no such assurance has been given.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp and West Brom boss Roy Hodgson remain favourites for the position with less than seven weeks until England’s opening Group D match against France in Donetsk.

Meanwhile, Newcastle will unveil a statue to their former boss, Sir Bobby Robson, at St James’ Park on May 6.
