Millwall have cut their losses thanks to a signficant rise in attendances following their promotion to the Championship last summer.

Financial results released today show that in the six months to December 31 Millwall had a deficit of £1.73million, which is £837,000 down on the same period in 2009.

The average League attendance at The Den has risen 18 per cent to 12,249, helping the club generate turnover of £5.8m - an increase of £2.6m.

Delighted chairman John G Berylson said: "Our attendances have increased at a time when a lot of football clubs are seeing a decline in attendances due to the current challenging economic environment. Clearly, being in a higher division has been the catalyst to increasing our revenues from football activities."

The wage bill at Millwall, who are 12th and six points off a play-off place, increased £1.1m to £4m in the wake of their promotion.
