Former Sutton manager Barrie Williams, who masterminded the famous FA Cup victory over Coventry, has died.

A statement from the Vanarama National League club said Williams had died in Spain, where he had been living in retirement.

Williams took charge of Sutton in 1979 and, after recording a series of lower-league triumphs, guided the U's to a 2-1 FA Cup victory over First Division side Coventry at Gander Green Lane in 1989.

He would later have a spell in charge of England Women.

Sutton United confirmed in a statement on Monday night that a ‘fuller appreciation’ would be released in due course, as the club came to terms with Williams’ passing.

The club’s current manager, Paul Doswell, paid his respects over social media.

"I was so pleased to meet Barrie at a recent home game," he posted on Twitter.

"Like John Rains a club legend who has sadly left us. Proud to of [sic] met both these great men and honoured to follow in their footsteps.

"Barrie created history and will never be forgotten."
