Felix Magath admits keeping Fulham in the Premier League is the toughest challenge he has faced in football.
Magath has a history of saving teams from relegation but the man tasked with rescuing Fulham’s season feels this would be his biggest achievement yet.
Fulham are bottom of the table and four points from safety ahead of tomorrow’s crucial trip to 19th-placed Cardiff.
“It is the most difficult situation I have been in because we are behind the other teams,” said Magath, who has saved Nuremberg, Werder Bremen, Frankfurt and Stuttgart from the drop in the Bundesliga.
“When all the teams are above you that is tougher but I remain convinced we will avoid relegation.
“Three points against Cardiff is very important for our confidence and there are games ahead of us that we can win.”
Magath, who has targeted six wins from Fulham’s remaining 10 games, added: “The team are growing together and that makes me sure we can survive. Tomorrow is an important game and I hope we take the chance to win. The first step, which is moving off the bottom, will give us a lot of confidence.”
Magath has confirmed that £12million signing Kostas Mitroglou is still not fully fit.
The striker, who has made just one 29th-minute substitute appearance since joining in January, sustained a hamstring injury playing for Greece on Wednesday.
Magath will assess his fitness today before deciding whether he is involved against Cardiff.
Meanwhile, Damien Duff could have played his last game for Fulham after being ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Duff’s contract expires at the end of the season. Scott Parker (knee) misses the trip to Cardiff.
