Tim Sherwood is convinced that Gareth Bale will commit his future to the club and help Tottenham in their bid for Champions League football.

Bale’s 21 Premier League goals were not enough to steer Spurs into fourth place and the 23-year-old has been linked with a big money move away from the club this summer.

But the winger is expected to sign a new £130,000-a-week deal this week and the club’s head of football development, Sherwood, is adamant the youngster will stay after the disappointment of missing out on Europe’s elite competition.

“I would say one million per cent he stays at Tottenham,” said Sherwood. “He is fantastically happy. I see him around the training ground all the time and he has a good working relationship with the manager.

“He loves his team-mates and they show him the respect he deserves and he gives it to them back. I don’t see him banging the door down looking for a move.

“It is crucial for all teams (to keep him) when you’re at the level we are pushing for in terms of Champions League football. It is important Gareth Bale stays at the club.”

“There will be a lot of clubs wanting to take Gareth, but he’s 23 and fortunately for Tottenham and Gareth, he’s got good advisors and they know he’s not a flash in the pan. They know there is in-built quality in this kid and next year he will be exactly the same.

“There is time for him to go overseas or to a club in England, but I think he wants to stay. He is developing fantastically well.

“He needs to put a level of consistency into his performances over season-to-season, I’m not talking week-to-week because he has already shown he can do that.

“But he needs to kick on next year and produce the same quality he has. The big opportunities will arise for him in the future if he wants to go over there (Spain).”
