Gary Lineker has taken a 23 per cent pay cut as part of a new five-year deal with the BBC.

The former England international will remain as the Match of the Day presenter until at least 2025 under the new terms.

Lineker was the corporation's best-paid star last year, according to their latest accounts, with an annual salary of £1.75million. However, the cut - around £400,000 - will now be reflected in next year's figures and could see him replaced at the top of the tree by Zoe Ball.

On the announcement of his new deal, Lineker said: "I love working with the BBC, and am very proud to continue to be a part of their outstanding football team.

"I'm looking forward to the next five years - with a European Championship and World Cup on the horizon, it's exciting times for me and the team."

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer also made the BBC's top ten earners for the last year, with an annual salary of £394,999.
