Granit Xhaka has signed a new contract at Arsenal that will tie him to the club until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Xhaka, 25, was an ever-present in Arsenal’s Premier League side last season, with only Hector Bellerin playing more minutes than him in all competitions.

“I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us,” head coach Unai Emery said. “He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more.

“I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

Though Xhaka has at times proven to be a polarizing figure among both pundits and Arsenal fans he enjoyed impressive runs of form in the second half of both his two seasons since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach for £33.8million in the summer of 2016.

“I am happy and proud to sign a new contract for Arsenal,” Xhaka said. “I hope for good results in the future.”
