Granit Xhaka to Arsenal: £33.8m Gunners target receives standing ovation and embraces boss in final game

Arsenal target Granit Xhaka was given a standing ovation as he was substituted late on in Borussia Mönchengladbach's final game of the Bundesliga season.

The Gunners have scouted the Switzerland international on several ocassions this term and are confident of securing a deal for his services this summer after tabling a £33.8million offer.

Monchengladbach are believed to be demanding £35million for Xhaka and the player wants his future sewn up before he departs for Euro 2016 with the Swiss national team.

The Bundesliga club hoped to retain Xhaka for a further season and felt their valuation would ward off suitors, but scenes at Darmstadt 98 on Saturday suggested Xhaka is preparing to leave the club.

The 23-year-old, who has been with Gladbach since 2012, was substituted in the 83rd minute to loud support from the visiting fans and embraced manager André Schubert on the touchline.

Xhaka set up the first as the visitors won 2-0 to secure fourth spot in the Bundesliga table.

Ahead of the match, he said: "It may be that it is my last game.

"But while I'm here, I will concentrate on Borussia."
