Chelsea's interim manager Guus Hiddink believes his side were not lethal enough in their Champions League last 16 first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, but insists the Blues remain "in the race" to progress to the next round.

Chelsea managed to get themselves back into their clash with PSG at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday after John Obi Mikel equalised to make amends for having given away a free kick, from which Zlatan Ibrahimovic had scored earlier in the first half.

However, with 12 minutes to go, substitute Edinson Cavani latched onto Angel Di Maria's superb pass from midfield to score the winner, which hands PSG a narrow advantage going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge in three weeks time.

Hiddink believes his side - who went close in the game through Diego Costa and Oscar - failed to take their chances but insists Chelsea can still qualify for the quarter-finals by making use of the crucial away goal scored in Paris.

"The result is negative but on the other hand an away goal is important. It hurt a bit because the team was playing decently against a team with capacity to play. But we are still in the race," he told BT Sport after the 2-1 loss.

"We were not lethal enough at times but otherwise we can be relatively happy.

"We didn't moan a lot about the absence of players and the rest got the confidence and did what they were asked.

"Over two legs, it is important you have the away goal. If we can do it at Stamford Bridge then a defeat doesn't count so much."
