Guus Hiddink has confirmed that he would like club legend Didier Drogba to join him in the Chelsea backroom staff.

Both were present at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, watching from the stands as the champions got back to winning ways with a relatively comfortable 3-1 victory over Sunderland.

Hiddink, 69, will be in the dugout for the Boxing Day match against in-form Watford after agreeing to return to Chelsea for a second spell as an interim manager.

Drogba was one of the key men at the club during Hiddink’s first spell in 2009, when Chelsea recovered from a disastrous start to the season to qualify for the Champions League and win the FA Cup.

The 37-year-old has since moved on to the MLS where he scored 11 goals in 11 games for Montreal Impact. His contract does not expire for another year but the interim manager is eager to bring back Drogba for a third spell at Stamford Bridge.

“I’d be happy to have him here,” Hiddink said. “At the moment he is still attached to his contract in Canada. But it is intended that he’s involved.”
