Harrison Ashby has thanked West Ham after his deadline day move to Newcastle.

The Scotland U21 international joins Eddie Howe’s side for an initial fee of £2m, though there are add-ons included, while West Ham also inserted a sell-on clause into the agreement.

Ashby, who made his debut for the Hammers in 2020, was keen to move to St James’ Park during the summer window but was denied an exit.

There had been a hope West Ham could convince their academy graduate to sign a new contract but that did turn out to be the case, so the decision was taken to sell the 21-year-old with fewer than six months on his deal.

Ashby becomes Newcastle’s second signing of the window after Everton’s Anthony Gordon and is seen as a back-up to England international Kieran Trippier.

Of his move north, Ashby said: “I wouldn’t be here today without West Ham, so I thank all the coaches that I had from growing up to now, but I’m delighted to be here.”
