Harry Kane believes Tottenham are good enough to win the Champions League after they demolished holders Real Madrid.

Tottenham’s 3-1 win at Wembley guaranteed their place in the last 16 and proved they can compete with Europe’s best.

Kane did not score but produced a fine performance and asked whether Tottenham could lift the trophy, he said: “Definitely, why not? We have to believe. Maybe nobody who watched that will want to play us although everyone in the Champions League is a good team. It will give us a lot of confidence and belief and we have to build on it.”

Tottenham were very poor in last season’s competition and were knocked out at the first-round group stage, so this year has been a considerable turnaround.

Thursday marks seven years to the day since Tottenham defeated Inter Milan – who, like Real Madrid, were the reigning champions – by the same scoreline.

Kane added: “We got to the quarter-finals that year and Madrid knocked us out. We feel we can beat anyone. You have to beat the best teams to go far and that is what we will try to do.”
