Harry Kane was left stunned as VAR ruled out what would have been a crucial winner for Tottenham in the Champions League.

The Spurs forward netted with virtually the final kick of the match as wild scenes of celebration broke out in north London, with Tottenham seemingly having come from behind to beat Sporting and book their place in the last 16 as group winners with a match to spare.

But technology had the final say as the offside lines were drawn, deeming Kane to have been offside when Emerson Royal headed the ball into the path of the Englishman to hook into the far corner.

It came after Rodrigo Bentancur had gone Spurs level with ten minutes remaining, with Marcus Edwards putting Sporting in front in the first-half with a fine strike from outside the box against his former club.

Rather than a dead-rubber against Marseille next week, Antonio Conte’s side must now travel to France and get a result if they are to reach the knockout stages. Just two points separate Spurs at the top of Group D and Marseille at the bottom.

Kane would likely have had the match off had Spurs’ fate already been secured but he will now have to play his part in ensuring the club do not look back on the disallowed goal with even more regret in a week’s time.

“I don’t really know what to say to be honest I’m just absolutely gutted it ended like that and not with a win,” Kane posted on Twitter.

“To take the positives we showed great fighting spirit and it’s all in our hands for the final group game.”
